Teatro del Lago brings Yo-Yo Ma to Chile
The most important cellist in the world will be presented next May 4th at Teatro del Lago of Frutillar as part of the tour, The Bach Project.
.
Frutillar, the Creative City of Music of Unesco, is one of the 36 places chosen by Yo-Yo Ma to be part of The Bach Project, his tour started around six continents which started in August 2018. The project contemplates only 36 concerts where the artist will perform the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach, a work that for Yo-Yo Ma “represents a unifying factor of cultures, which manages to summon humanity transversally”.
.
The most outstanding cellist in the world, winner of 14 Grammys and Messenger of Peace UN, arrives in Chile as part of the Ninth Artistic and Educational Season of Teatro del Lago.
.
“I think that culture, the way we express ourselves and understand each other, is an essential part of building a strong society. I hope that together we can use Bach’s music to start a bigger conversation about our culture, “says the Chinese-American cellist.
.
It is precisely this spirit that has inspired the artist to also carry out, in each country he visits, activities of social and cultural impact in order to connect people around subjects that are convened in a transversal manner. And in Chile, according to what was revealed today by Yo-Yo Ma’s office, they will focus on how culture can help understand natural forces, such as the universe and earthquakes.
.
With actions in the north, center and south of the country, the “social” agenda of the artist contemplates conversations and interventions in the Atacama Desert and Santiago, in addition to the concert in Frutillar, the second since its debut in our country in 2013, occasion in which was also presented at Teatro del Lago.
.
His agenda
Everything will begin on May 1 next. The artist, who will come from Peru, will land in the north of the country to perform the Bach activity under the stars. Yo-Yo Ma will join the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in a musical meeting under the starry sky, which celebrates the ways in which we seek to understand our place in the universe.
In the same line and also in the north, on May 2 will conduct the private conversation Culture and the cosmos, a conversation between science and art about how our relationship with the universe influences our cultural perspective and understanding of the human experience.
.
His visit will continue in Frutillar, where on May 4 he will perform the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach in a concert with which Banco BICE will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
.
On May 5, meanwhile, the musician will arrive at the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) in Santiago to participate in two experiences that invite the public to explore encounters with the natural world and the collective forces of sound. The first will be a live installation that asks passers-by to evoke memories of earthquakes by mixing their voices to create a collective experience. Then, a choir will interpret Variations of a Antisecret, a work that explores the powerful intersection between sound, music, resistance and public space. Both proposals belong to the multidisciplinary Chilean artist, Constanza Alarcón Tennen.
.
His time in Chile will culminate with a visit on May 6 to the school Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez (Renca) belonging to the Network of SIP schools, where he will share with the young music students, who will also perform some works for the artist. It is a key activity for Yo-Yo Ma who has carried out actions of social impact in all the countries he has visited as part of his tour, under the conviction that music is a unifying factor of cultures, which transcends transversal to humanity.
