The Embassy of Spain and the Young Orchestra of Ecuador, present a zarzuela gala with leading Ecuadorian soloists such as María Isabel Albuja, Yanina Murga, Jorge Cassis and Diego Zamora in the National Theater Sucre,this Saturday November 16, 2019.

Love the Spanish, is an evening of zarzuela that invites us to create a bridge between Madrid and Quito, through some love stories that are interwoven with a selection of the best arias, duos and pasodobles from the repertoire of the Spanish zarzuela. This gala will take place in the Teatro Nacional Sucre and will feature the performance of the lyric singers María Isabel Albuja, Yanina Murga, Jorge Cassis and Diego Zamora, under the scenic and dramaturgy direction of María Elena Mexía, the text by Albert Tola and the musical direction of Jorge Oviedo and Diego Carneiro.

In the forties of the last century, during a trip by a zarzuela company on a Spanish ship, the baritone, in love with a great soprano who in turn is married to the director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, decides to write his memoirs recalling his loves through popular arias, while organizing concerts on deck so that the hours go by quickly. With the seagulls as a public, heading for infinity, the entire company rehearses and sings on deck the arias that they will represent in Quito upon arrival. The music is mixed with the thread of the thought of our baritone, who tries to assimilate the history of passion that has lived in this strange limbo that is the sea, between the firm lands where life takes place.

About María Isabel Albuja

Born in Quito. From an early age she began her musical studies, specializing years later in Lyric Singing at the San Francisco University of Quito and the University of Boston, as well as with private professors and master classes in Madrid and Italy. María Isabel has been the protagonist of most operas, cantatas, oratories, musicals and zarzuelas that have been staged in the city, such as: Manuela in Manuela and Bolívar, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Mimí in La Bohème, Duquesa Carolina in Luisa Fernanda, among others. In addition, she has been part of an infinity of concerts as soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra and soprano soloist of Teatro Nacional Sucre.

About Diego Zamora

Baritono Cuenca. He has played several leading roles: Marcello in La Boheme, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Javert in Los Miserables, Simone in Gianni, Vidal Hernando in Luisa Fernanda, among others. He has won the Salzburg Voice Festival lyric world cup in Austria, the Francisco Paredes Herrera Medal of Merit, the Vicente Rocafuerte award and the Bicentennial Medal for International Cultural Merit. Finalist in the Lyric Singing Contest of the Metropolitan Opera House. Author of the Anthem to San Gerardo. Founder of the Cultural Corporation Diego Zamora with the endorsement of Opera Caballe by his Master Montserrat Caballe, Spain.

About Yanina Murga 

Mezzosoprano from Guayaquil. She has been cheered in the main theaters and stages of the country, such as: Teatro Nacional Sucre, Bolívar Theater, House of Music, Cuenca House of Culture, Centro de Arte Theater, Sánchez Aguilar Theater and Centro Civic Theater (Guayaquil), accompanied by important high-level orchestras, such as the National Symphony, the Guayaquil Symphony, the Quito Philharmonic and the Guayaquil Philharmonic. She received the award “Loyalty, Honor and Glory to Excellence” for her contribution to Culture in the province of Manabí and won the First Place in the V and VI Festival of Classical Music, as well as the XXII Young Talent Contest to National level.

About Jorge Cassis

Jorge Cassis studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov Higher Conservatory of Music in Guayaquil, under the guidance of the Masters: Beatriz Parra (Ecuador), Irina Galik (Ukraine) and Konstantin Simonyan (Armenia). He has won awards and mentions in important singing competitions. He has played numerous roles such as: Remendado, Morales and Don José in Carmen, Gastón in La traviata, Rodolfo in La boheme, Bolívar in Manuela and Bolívar, El Saboyano and Javier Moreno in Luisa Fernanda, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Bamford in Sweeney Todd, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Ferrando in Cosí fan tutte, Faust in Faust, Ruggero in La Rondine, Tamino in The Magic Flute of the Andes, Spanish adaptation of Mozart’s Magic Flute ); and Rafael’s character at the Ecuadorian premiere of the Mariachi Opera by José Martínez and Leonard Foglia, Cross the Face of the Moon. He works as a professor of vocal technique at the Harmony Cultural Foundation and, as a tenor of the Lyric School of the Foundation Teatro Nacional Sucre.
