The Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires presents its 2020 season
A season full of proposals for all audiences: 8 opera titles, 6 of Ballet, 19 concerts of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, the Beethoven Festival, the Cycle of Great International Performers, the Colón for Guys – which will include during all the year the success of Colón for babies-, Colón in the City and more artistic activities expandingor new audiences.
In the Foyer of Teatro Colón, the General Director of the first Argentine Coliseum María Victoria Alcaraz presented the activities and projects that the Teatro Colón will develop throughout 2020, accompanied by the Head of Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the Minister of Culture of the City, Enrique Avogadro, the Secretary General and International Relations of Government of the City of Buenos Aires Fernando Straface, the Chief of Cabinet of Ministers of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Felipe Miguel and the presence of the Artistic and Production General Director of Teatro Colón, Enrique Arturo Diemecke.
María Victoria Alcaraz, Director General of the Teatro Colón, welcomed the beginning of the presentation ceremony expressing his gratitude and shared: “When we arrived at the Teatro Colón, Horacio asked me only one thing: that the Teatro Colón be for more and more neighbors of the City of Buenos Aires, which is an open-door institution, where everyone can enter. The new audiences are the babies, the boys, the boys of the schools, the families, the young people, the adults, older adults, all options that we are thinking so that more people can enjoy the Teatro Colón ”. He also said: “We work on several fronts, one of them is the artistic quality that the Teatro Colón must always have and maintain with its proposals and offers. We have gone from 100 annual functions in 2015 to more than 300 in 2019 and that we will increase in 2020. This means a great effort by your artistic bodies and the organization. ”
Then, it was the turn of Fernando Straface, who took the opportunity to highlight: “In February Horacio will lead a week in the city of Buenos Aires in China. The invitation of the Chinese National Theater to make presentations of the Colón is a huge honor, which is a great display of casts, scenery and logistics. Task that we are doing with María Victoria and Enrique, to try to achieve this great milestone for Argentina and the City of Buenos Aires. ”
Then took the floor Enrique Avogadro: “Something that I emphasize is this vocation of permanently expanding the public, access to culture is the great challenge that Horacio asks us for the whole ministry: that more and more people are protagonists of culture in the Buenos aires city. Culture is much more than entertainment, it is a tool of personal development but above all collective. And it is therefore a central tool in creating new opportunities. The Colon with all the initiatives mentioned by María Victoria, with this permanent opening to new audiences, and not only in this wonderful venue but also going out, plays a central role. ”

Finally, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta said: ““Congratulations to the entire team of the Teatro Colón, it really is an honor and a pride of the city of Buenos Aires and the whole country, from the point of view of the quality of the programming, as well as in terms of achieving the objective that we set so that more and more Buenos Aires, more Argentines, can reach the Teatro Colón. That is why we have to intensify our federal agenda so that they can enjoy this wonder throughout our country, taking the different stable bodies of the Theater to the provinces. ”
Then, the artistic presentation of the 2020 Season was given, with María Victoria Alcaraz who gave the floor to Enrique Arturo Diemecke, Artistic and Production General Director of the Teatro Colón, who shared: “For us it is a great emotion to be present here and to be able to offer concerts, operas, ballets, and that we are reaching the deepest and most beautiful language that exists in the universe, which is music. This is the cathedral of music in Argentina and represents the country in the whole world. This is thanks to all of you, the public and all who believe in this wonder. ”
Various musical styles converge in the Opera Season that will offer 8 titles: Nabucco de Giuseppe Verdi, The Consul composed by Gian Carlo Menotti, The Pearl Fishermen of Georges Bizet, Tosca Composed by Giacomo Puccini, The Gold of the Rhine by Richard Wagner, Lucia di Lammermoor composed by Gaetano Donizetti, Xerxes of the composer Georg Friedrich Händel with stage direction by Alejandro Tantanian and La vida breve – in concert version – by Manuel de Falla.
The Stable Ballet of the Teatro Colón, under the direction of Paloma Herrera, will present 5 titles: Giselle, La fille mal gardée, Manon, Sinfonietta / Carmen and The bayadera. Top-level teachers, dancers and choreographers join the Stable Ballet this season around titles from different eras and styles. Marianela Núñez, Vadim Muntagirov, Herman Cornejo, Polina Semiónova and Roberto Bolle will be some of the guest stars.
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires, which has the musical direction of Enrique Arturo Diemecke, will display all its power in a subscription that includes 19 concerts. The concert agenda will feature the participation of notable guest soloists such as Martha Argerich, Boris Giltburg, Ray Chen, Ingrid Fliter and Midori, among others. Various guest directors such as the Israeli Pinchas Steinberg, the Swiss Charles Dutoit, Emmanuel Villaume and Alexander Vedernikov, will also be present this season.
The Beethoven Festival, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the composer, with the integral of its five Concerts for piano and orchestra, becomes special not only for having Martha Argerich as the nucleus of the cycle but also for promoting a series of reunions with pianist friends of all the times. Among them, music director Charles Dutoit, Homer Francesch, Dong Hyek Lim, and Lars Vogt.
The Cycle of Great International Interpreters will gather 6 great concerts and recitals. Thewill be present Mahler Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Gustavo Dudamel, the violinist Viktoria Mullova with the orchestra Moscow Virtuosi and Philharmonia Orchestra Tokyo Geidai among other major presentations.
The Cycle Colón for Boys will feature proposals designed for the whole family: concerts, ballets and opera will be adapted for children. Giselle (ballet), A director in distress (concert), The barber of Seville (opera), La fille mal gardée (ballet), The snowstorm (musical illustrations on a story by Aleksandr Pushkin) and The cabin on chicken feet (concert). This season also has a series of concerts, a musical play and a playful proposal for babies from 3 to 24 months to live their first experience at Teatro Colón.
The second edition of the Holiday Colony, aimed at children between 6 and 13 years will take place between January and February, participating in workshops and essays putting their imagination and expressiveness into action day after day.
In February,be presented for the first time in Argentina STAR WARS will: A NEW HOPE IN CONCERT. This is a new co-production between the Teatro Colón and Disney, in which the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires, under the direction of maestro Enrique Arturo Diemecke, will give life to the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning composer’s film John Williams, while The movie is projected. You can also enjoy an exclusive experience called “Star Wars Experience” at the Centro de Experimentación del Teatro Colón (CETC).
They also integrate this 2020 season: the Cycle Coral Symphonic Fertilizer, Chamber Opera, the Contemporary Cycle in its ninth season, Bach Connection Beethoven – a cycle that proposes to display the powerful and at the same time subtle connections between two of the most important musical talents in history – the Experimentation Center of the Teatro Colón Celebrating 30 years dedicated to promoting a vast universe of musical possibilities, Argentine Performers that has already become a weekend classic with free admission and that this season will feature a total of 20 concerts and Columbus in the City, the proposal that opens its doors to the two great orchestras – Stable and Philharmonic – and the Stable Ballet to meet new audiences at the Usina del Arte and the Belgrano Auditorium. The 2020 academic season of the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón will feature a wide artistic and training variety that will enrich both the public and the Institute itself.
