L ‘elisir d’amore opens the season of the Ópera de Tenerife
The new production of the Opera (e)Studio of the Ópera de Tenerife is staged from October 24 to 27 under the orders of the musical director Antonio Méndez and on stage Pablo Maritano.
The Cabildo de Tenerife presents the opera L’elisir d’amore, by Donizetti, which will be performed in the Symphony Hall of the Auditorio de Tenerife from October 24 to 27, a co-production of the Ópera de Tenerife, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theater, which this year is funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Commission. The cast responsible for carrying out the production will be the components of the seventh edition of the academy of high specialization Opera (e) Studio.
The details of this production were announced in the Auditorio de Tenerife by the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo, Concepción Rivero; the artistic director of the Auditorium, José Luis Rivero; the artistic director of Opera (e) Studio, Giulio Zappa; the musical director, Antonio Méndez, and the stage director, Pablo Maritano.
The ten components of this edition arise from the auditions held in February in Bologna, Tbilisi, Madrid and Tenerife, which were attended by 181 candidates of 33 nationalities. The singers that participate are María Rita Combattelli (soprano); Beatriz de Sousa (soprano); Klodjan Kaçani (tenor); César Arrieta (tenor); Alberto Bonifazio (baritone); Jacobo Ochoa (baritone); Givi Gigineishvili (bass); Matteo Andrea Mollica (bass); Sofía Esparza (soprano) and Leonora Tess (soprano).
Concepción Rivero acknowledged that “it is a pleasure to present L’elisir d’amore“, which will be represented in this magnificent setting and that is the beginning of a new season of the Ópera de Tenerife. For his part, the artistic director of the Auditorio de Tenerife, José Luis Rivero, presented this production, which will be starred by the singers of Opera (e) Studio, “the lyric singing academy that from the beginning we have had the honor of directed by Giulio Zappa and from which we have achieved the emergence of singers who are currently in international career ”.
The artistic director explained that “this edition is unique for several reasons: it is the first time that the head conductor of the Tenerife Symphony conducts one of our operas musically and for that we appreciate the generosity of Antonio Méndez; it is the European debut of one of the most recognized stage directors in Latin America, Pablo Maritano; and this project is a co-production of Ópera de Tenerife, Teatro Comunale di Bolognia and the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theater, chosen from more than 500 European projects within the Creative Europe program, being the only opera selected ”.
For Giulio Zappa, “this seventh edition is special for the support of Creative Europe.” The artistic director of Opera (e) Studio said that “in my more than 20 years of professional career I have not found in any theater a team as dedicated and passionate as that of the Ópera de Tenerife, which is already family.” As for the participants, Zappa thanks them “these two months of living together in which I have also learned a lot from them”.
The titular director of the Tenerife Symphony, Antonio Méndez, recognizes that “I am very excited to debut at Ópera de Tenerife and it is a pleasure to be at the forefront of this title of Opera (e) Studio, an interesting and necessary project in the world of the lyric, which has brought us this year to two great casts with great level and very different from each other, which enriches the final result because the public values each voice better, each character”.
For his part, Pablo Maritano thanked the invitation to the mayor of Ópera de Tenerife, Alejandro Abrante, and Jorge Cabrera, head of technical production of the Auditorio de Tenerife, and his “tireless” team. “The whole team has involved us with their enthusiasm and, although there are always challenges in this sector, we are very happy with how we have faced them and the final result.”
This production of L’elisir d’amore of the Ópera de Tenerife is a giocoso melodramma by Gaetano Donizetti and libretto by Felice Romani, based on the text Le philtre de Eugène Scribe for the opera by Daniel François Esprit Auber. One of the composer’s most acclaimed opera buffs, thanks to unforgettable melodies such as ‘A furtive tear’ and an effervescent plot that tells us the loves of the beautiful Adina and the illustrious Nemorino. The work was premiered at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan on May 12, 1832.

Opera (e) Studio is the academy of high specialization for artists of Ópera de Tenerife, which since 2012 has Giulio Zappa as artistic director. This project was born with the objective of forming in all the disciplines of the operatic genre a quarry of artists that meets the demands of the current labor market. Since last September, the selected artists are in Tenerife working multiple aspects, from the various techniques of musical and scenic interpretation to the style, diction, body expression or dramaturgy that are interspersed with the essays to the professional rhyme that marks a theater: costume tests, makeup and rehearsal with the orchestra.
