The 2022-2023 Season of the Teatro Real begins under the sign of Orfeo -Orphée, by Philip Glass, will premiere in Spain on September 21 at the Teatros del Canal- and its spell will run throughout the season, with the presentation of L ‘Orfeo, by Claudio Monteverdi and Orfeo ed Euridice, by Christoph Willibald Gluck. The official opening of the 2022-2023 Season will be on October 24, with the revival of Giuseppe Verdi’s spectacular Aida, conceived and renovated by Hugo de Ana, under the musical direction of Nicola Luisotti.

 

The Teatro Real presented its 2022-2023 Season, in which eight new co-productions and nine titles that will premiere for the first time in Spain stand out, including Orfeo, by the American composer Philip Glass.

 

The Teatros del Canal will host 3 productions – Orphée, by Philip Glass; Diàlegs de Tirant i Carmesina, by Joan Magrané; and Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell- and the Círculo de Bellas Artes will present Anti-formalist Rayok, by Dmitri Shostakóvich.

 

In the stage direction, the next season stands out the presence of 4 women: Mariame Clément (Achilles in Esciros), Bárbara Lluch (La sonnambula), Sasha Waltz (L’Orfeo) and Blanca Li (Dido and Aeneas), the two latter also choreographers.

 

Returning to Real Christof Loy (Arabella), Laurent Pelly (IlTurkish in Italy), Bob Wilson (Turandot), Barrie Kosky (The Nose), John Fulljames (Nixon in China), Justin Way (Tristan and Isolde), Rafael Villalobos ( Orphée) and Hugo de Ana (Aida) and Marc Rosich (Diàlegs de Tirant i Carmesina) and Johannes Stepanek (Anti-formalist Rayok) make their debut, in addition to the aforementioned Mariame Clément, Bárbara Lluch and Blanca Li.

 

 

Among the musical directors, as always, Ivor Bolton (Achilles in Esciros and Nixon in China) and Nicola Luisotti (Aida and Turandot) have a more relevant presence.

 

Returning to Real are Semyon Bychkov (Tristan and Isolde), Maurizio Benini (La sonnambula), Daniel Oren (Aida), David Afkam (Arabella), Mark Wigglesworth (The Nose), Diego García Rodríguez (Aida), Jordi Francés (Orphée) and Francesc Prat (Diàlegs de Tirant i Carmesina) and, with guest orchestras, Pablo Heras-Casado (El retablo de Maese Pedro), William Christie (Dido y Eneas), René Jacobs (Orfeo ed Euridice), Vicent Dumestre (Coronis) and Francesco Corti (Ptolemy, King of Egypt).

 

Giacomo Sagripanti (Il Turco in Italia) and Leonardo García Alarcón (L’Orfeo) debut at the Real, this one with the Freiburger Barockorchester.

 

 

Six orchestras and two guest choirs will participate in the season: the Freiburger Barockorchester and the Vocalconsort Berlin in L’Orfeo, by Claudio Monteverdi; Les Arts Florissants in Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell; the Baroque Orchestra of Seville in Achilles in Esciros, by Francesco Corselli; the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in El retablo de Maese Pedro and Concerto for Harpsichord, by Manuel de Falla, and in the Pulcinella Suite, by Ígor Stravisnki; Il Pomo d’Oro in Ptolemy, King of Egypt, by Georg Friedrich Händel; Le Poème Harmonique en Coronis, by Sebastián Durón; and the Freiburger Barockorchester and the RIAS Kammerchor in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice.

 

The Teatro Real Principal Choir, under the direction of Andrés Máspero, and the Teatro Real Principal Orchestra, with its principal conductor, Ivor Bolton, who enjoy growing national and international prestige, will participate in a large part of the program, consolidating the links with its guest principal directors, Nicola Luisotti and Pablo Heras-Casado.

 

Parallel to the titles of the season, an ambitious program of parallel activities is offered – film cycles, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, courses, round tables, workshops, guided tours, children’s activities, etc. – organized at the Teatro Real and in collaboration with 28 cultural institutions, including the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, the British Council, the Spanish Film Library Cine Doré and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.

 

The Theater continues to work hard to attract and retain young audiences, with a series of initiatives framed in its El Real Joven program and facilities and privileges granted to its Young Friends, whose number continues to grow.

 

Next season, 4 Youth Previews will be organized for those under 35 years of age, and the advantages and discounts on buying seats through the Butaca Joven or Last Minute seats will continue.

 

The Opera Week, with its broadcasts and popular activities for the dissemination of opera, and the Carroza del Real, a traveling stage always prepared to offer chamber concerts in different parts of the country, are two of the most outstanding projects framed in the Teatro Real program near you, valid until the end of the season.

 

In addition to its artistic programming, the Teatro Real continues to strengthen dialogue with other types of music, co-producing the Universal Music Festival in the summer months and, throughout the season, the Flamenco Real dance and singing performances, which take place on Thursdays and Fridays in its Ballroom.

 

The Teatro Real will increase the national and international diffusion of its programming through new recordings and live broadcasts on My Opera Player, whose catalog continues to grow with the regular addition of new offerings from more than 50 theaters and auditoriums around the world. Recently, a space dedicated solely to flamenco has been created within the platform, with its own tab, to promote the dissemination of this Spanish art to new audiences around the world.
