Il matrimonio segreto de Cimarosa, a co-production by Ópera de Tenerife with the Teatro Regio di Parma and the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, with the stage direction of Roberto Catalano and the musical direction Davide Levi, will be presented from March 18 to 21 at Auditorio de Tenerife.

Tenerife’s Cabildo presents the opera Il matrimonio segreto, by Domenico Cimarosa, which will be performed in the Symphonic Hall of the Tenerife Auditorium from March 18 to 21, a co-production with the Teatro Reggio di Parma and the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, stages that will host this production in the 2021/22 season. The staging – which takes place in a New York patisserie from the 1950s – will be carried out by the twelve singers who make up the eighth class of the Opera (e) Studio project, a learning academy organized by Ópera de Tenerife.

The details of this production were announced on Thursday the 11th by the insular director of Culture of the Cabildo, Alejandro Krawietz; the artistic director of Opera (e) Studio, Giulio Zappa; and the stage and musical directors, Roberto Catalano and Davide Levi, in an informative event in which the twelve singers who will star in the four performances were also present.

The insular director highlighted “the integral character in the operatic field that this programme entails”, which he described as a highlight within the Ópera de Tenerife season. Krawietz explained the difficulties that have surrounded this edition with the pandemic and pointed out that “during their stay on the Island, the twelve singers undergo a learning process that carries a very intense professional rhythm.” The representative of the Cabildo de Tenerife reported that “these singers were chosen through an international call to which 195 applicants signed up, a record number in all the editions that have been held.”

Giulio Zappa highlighted the importance of a project in which almost a hundred singers have participated in the eight years. He thanked the entire team for their involvement in carrying out this work and wishes that “the singers always remember this stage in Tenerife, despite the fact that this year has been a bit peculiar due to the health circumstance” and he hopes that it will be an experience “Important and fun for his life and professional career.”

The stage director of Il Matrimonio Segreto, Roberto Catalano, assured that he felt “very happy to be here in this peculiar historical moment; this is a team effort and I thank everyone for making me feel at home ”. The musical director Davide Levi highlighted that “the Tenerife Symphony is doing a wonderful job” and also appreciated that it is “incredible” to be able to offer a concert with an audience in the current circumstances, so “I am very fortunate to be part of this project ”.

The Catalan singer Jan Antem spoke on behalf of his companions. “It is a challenge to perform this opera because it has a very peculiar style,” said the Spanish baritone, who added that “the experience in Tenerife has been very pleasant” and also recognizes that it fulfills a dream of representing this same title in Italy, “in two theaters with a lot of tradition ”, such as the Teatro Reggio di Parma and the Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

Il matrimonio segreto will take the Tenerife public to the New York of the 50s, where the Geronimo & Co. patisserie specialized in babàs (typical sweet of Naples) is located and run by an Italian who misses his hometown. His youngest daughter, Carolina, has secretly married Paolino, a pastry delivery man, and they both dream of starring in Broadway musicals. Geronimo’s idea of ​​marrying his daughters to great lords will lead to the development of the plot, which was originally located in 18th century Bologna.

The performances will be provided by the young artists Giulia Mazzola (Italy), Veronika Seghers (Germany), Eleonora Nota (Italy), Marilena Ruta (Italy), Mara Gaudenzi (Italy), Claire Gascoin (France), Bekir Serbest (Turkey) , Antonio Mandrillo (Italy), Ignas Melnikas (Lithuania), Francesco Leone (Italy), Jan Antem (Spain) and Ramiro Maturana (Chile). In addition to Roberto Catalano and Davide Levi, the staff is made up of Emanuele Sinisi as the head of the scenography, the costumes have been created by Ilaria Ariemme and the lighting director is Fiammetta Baldiserri.

Opera (e) Studio is the Ópera de Tenerife project that aims to train singers after a process of comprehensive artistic improvement that began last January. This initiative is distinguished by its versatility since the artists work on multiple aspects, from the various techniques of musical and scenic interpretation; to the style, diction, corporal expression or dramaturgy that will be interspersed with sessions at the professional rhythm that marks a theater: costume tests, make-up and rehearsal with the orchestra.
